Before I start housetraining with my new Golden Retriever pup, I was wondering whether or not I would have to take her out in the middle of the night to urinate. A 2-month pup can only hold it for about 3 hours, right? So, how does this apply when she’s asleep at night? If she does need to pee, how will I know?No they can’t… Their bladders are too small to hold it all night. The older your pup gets the longer it will be able to hold it.
It was several months before my pup was able to hold his. Just lay down some puppy pads down if your not gonna crate her. Crate training is much easier to get your dog housebroken. Take her out right before bed too..Yes, but its not healthy. I recommend kenneling her up at night and then you have 2 options (Kenneling is not bad. Its like a den if there were in their natural habitat with their mom. Just NEVER scold them while they are in there, and maybe give them a few treats and they love it!)
2 options
Let her out once in the night (round 5-6ish hours) after her last "potty" until she is round 16ish weeks. In an enclosed kennel where she only fits in there 2-3 times (so she wont want to go potty in the little area she sleeps. Just enought to build bladder muscles, but not her health)
Or sleep a good 8ish hours and open the kennel up so she has room to move around. Put a puppy pad on one side, and let her sleep on the other so when she has to go in the night she wont be forced to hold it or lay in it.
…. this takes time. But results are amazing!
usually a 8 week old pup can hold it’s bladder for maybe two hours so in the middle of the night you would have to take the pup out for potty. when my boxer was 7 weeks old i took her hour every two hours and includes the night as well. i would not give her any food or water two hours before bed time. hope this help. as the pup gets older it will able to hold it potty longer.Yes, you will have to take it out in the middle of the night or your going to wake up to a mess. An 8 wk old puppy should be let out hourly, after each meal, an a couple times in the middle of the night. Their cry most often will let you know when they have to potty.A pup that young will not likely hold it all nite.
Put her in a crate.. it should only be big enough for her to turn around and lay down.. when she wakes up she will cry and wake you up.. she will need to pee then. she will probably wake up every 2-4 hours. Not a chance. But keep that dream. My dog was almost a year old before he could hold it for the night. At one and a half I have to literally drag him to the door after 10 hours in the house. Longer if it’s cold out.your doing a good idea taking the water away. you should get a mat and put her on it when ever she wee’s, she’ll get the idea that thats the place to go when not outside. everything else, your doing what you can. – good luckYou’ll smell it.no, small bladder-maybe 3 hours. use padsA good solution would be to line half your puppy crate with newspaper and the other half with a soft Vet Bed. I always do this with my litters and I have seen puppies as young as three weeks crawl to urinate and defaecate on the newspaper rather than soil their own bedding.
This will save you having to get up during the night.
You can start to housetrain your puppy by putting her on regular meals, i.e breakfast, lunch, tea and supper and take her outside on a leash after every meal to a designated spot and tell her to ‘go potty’ or whatever phrase you wish to use. Once she has performed for you give her lots of praise, maybe even a little treat for being a ‘good girl’ and then take her straight indoors. You need to be with her to teach her what is expected of her. If you just put a puppy outside on its own it will only play around and then most probably come straight indoors and poop or pee on your best rug, hence the reason for staying with her.
If you follow this routine first thing in the morning before her breakfast, then again after breakfast (within 15 minutes of eating) after all her meals, after play and after she has been asleep for any length of time then you will have a clean puppy in no time. Also take her outside last thing at night before you settle her down for bed.
Puppies do not have any control over their bodily functions until they are about 6 months old so you will get the odd ‘accident’ up until then. This is usually through no fault of the puppy’s but because she has either been left alone too long or you haven’t been vigilant enough to notice the signs that she needs to go out, i.e. sniffing the ground and turning round in circles.
It is not a good idea to deprive the puppy of her last meal, which should be given at least 1 hour before bed time so she has enough time to relieve herself before settling down for the night. She needs a full stomach to keep those hunger pangs at bay through the night otherwise she will be very hungry and most probably cry and keep you awake.
I hope this helps you. Good luck with your puppy.
