I have a beagle and I’ve done tons of research on their eating habits. It’s advised to not feed beagles table scraps and such. I’ve also read that dogs should not eat cat food because it is really fatty for them. I tell my parents not to do it, but it seems the minute I turn my head, they sneak her some food. What do I do? I caught my grandma giving my beagle some mcdonalds fries, my mom giving her carrots and other vegetables, and my dad mixes cat food with the dog food because my dog wont eat it unless it’s in there. I’m surprised she’s not ready to explode from all the food they’re feeding her. Also, my dad gives her 2 large (and I mean LARGE) costco dog biscuits a day. I’ve seen dog biscuits that are meant for medium sized dogs and it’s very small… about the size of a ID tag, and advised to only give 2-3 a day. What do I do? I tell them every day not to do it but they do it anyways when I look away. I’m so angry that my parents wont do the responsible thing!Oh my! Beagles will eat until they blow up. It does not mean they are hungry in that they need the food for nutrition, but that they love to eat (dachshunds are notorious for this also). This is more than likely a genetic predisposition for this breed along with other breeds. DON’T give in to them. Feed a good hard dog food with a tablespoon or so of canned food (the fatty not chunky kind) which will make the dry tastier and add the needed fat to their diet which dry foods do not contain. You can also mix some veggies with the food also. Since your beagle loves to eat (and I am guessing might already be obese), feed two small meals a day – breakfast and dinner. STOP with the cat food – too high in protein which can cause serious health problems. Also, skip the dog biscuits (high in calories) or trade a biscuit out for one feeding. Maybe you could talk to them some more, and also explain to them the research you’ve done on beagles and their eating habits. Tell them that you are concerned about your beagle’s overall health, and besides the table scraps and cat food not being good for their long-term health, there’s no way to predict what the immediate outcome is from the foods they sneak your dog (diarrhea, etc.).
I have a Beagle, so I understand their desire to eat anything and everything. You just need to be firm, and get mad if you have to.
It is very dangerous for Beagles to overeat, they can develop huge health problems. You need to ration their food, do not leave it up to them and do not let anyone else feed it. Next time you see the vet, tell the vet what goes on and have the vet have a little chat with them.
Oh, I see you are on your own. Just don’t take the dog to their house. See about putting your dog on a special weight loss formula and exercise routine.fill the house with dog foodgive them a smack downSit them down and explain it to them calmly. That AND start taking more responsibility for your dog – feed the dog yourself.
As for the cat food mixed with dog food – just don’t mix the cat food anymore. She’ll eventually get hungry enough to eat the food as it is. Just don’t give in and give it to her. Feed her at the same time of day for 15 minutes or so. After she’s done eating, take it away.
If she doesn’t touch the food, then just take it away. And feed her the next time her schedule tells her to be fed. She’ll get it
Good luck!
