I have a 4 1/2 month old male maltese. I’ve had him for 5 days and I’m trying to crate train him. The first 2 days he was very good. He went potty outside everytime I took him out and didn’t go in the house. The other times recently, I will take him out and he might piddle and be done. As soon as we go back in he decides to go to the bathroom then. Example: Last night I took him out for about 10 minutes. He decided all he wanted to do was play. (I’ve been putting his crate by my bed to soothe him for a couple of weeks). As soon as I shut the bedroom door and walked in the bathroom I come out to see that he had piddled on my carpet. I took him over there and sternly said "NO BAD DOG" and took him back downstairs. Again nothing happened. We got back up in the room and I turned my back for a second and he piddles again!!. I do the same thing "NO BAD DOG" take him out and he just sits there or wants to play. In the crate training guide it says not to use he crate as punishment, and I haven’t, but I’m stuck on how to punish him correctely. I automatically want him to go inside the crate but I dont want him to associate it with punishment and hate it. This morning is another example. I took him out first thing and he doesnt do anything. Come back in and he poops on the carpet! I take him back down and he does nothing. I know he is getting plenty of bathroom breaks. I just dont understand why he won’t "go" outside. I’m thinking he might be mad because me and my husband arent there at the same time and the fact he has to be put up and is getting use to it and he’s rebelling,or he’s testing our authority,or he thinks it’s too cold, or our female maltese across the hall is on his mind while he is outside,or he just doesnt get it. I was so frustrated I even staring crying last night. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
First, punishment doesn’t work. Once the accident has happened, the dog isn’t going to relate his act to your punishment. So just forget any form of punishment. You have to catch them in the act and get him outside fast. So if he is going to be unsupervised, even for a minute, he needs to be in the crate.
A trick I have seen done that really works is to tie the dog to you with a leash so he never has the chance to sneak away from you – you are always watching him. Then you can catch him in the act and get him outside fast. When he goes in the right place, praise him heavily.NEVER leave a puppy unsupervised…
this is an excellent link on how to correctly crate train a pup.
it WILL help you A LOT!

Is it getting cold where you live? We got a puppy a few days ago and in the morning and at night when it’s cold, she doesn’t like to be in the grass because it’s sometimes frost covered and she won’t go because of it. I ended up placing her near the steps to our deck so she could find a spot on the dirt. This way the grass isn’t grazing her belly and getting her cold. Also, I have to completely ignore her when it’s potty time, no kids can come out with me when I take her to potty because then she just wants to play. I put her in her spot, and step up a few steps so she doesn’t play with me, and quitely wait, eventually she will get the idea and go. Sometimes she does right away, sometimes it takes 10 minutes or so. It also helps to take your dog to the same spot every time because, after a while, they put 2 and 2 together and know why you are taking them there. Good luck! Potty training is HARD! There is no place for correction in housetraining. It does not teach the pup what you want him to do and it can lead to many undesirable behaviors such as hiding waste, not eliminating at all in front of the owners, and eating the waste.
If he doesn’t go within ten minutes bring him in and put him in his crate. This isn’t punishment – you aren’t screaming "Bad dog! Get in your crate." You are simply placing him in there to prevent accidents. Take him out again in about 15 minutes or when he shows signs of needing to go. Once he does go outside, praise him, give him a treat, and let him spend a bit more time outside sniffing and exploring.
There is absolutely no point in taking him outside right after he eliminates in the house. He just went to the bathroom – he has nothing to produce. If you happen to see him eliminating in the house, clap your hands or say "Uh uh" to interupt him and rush him out to finish. If you don’t see him having an accident do not punish him. He won’t understand why you are upset because it is after the behavior, and the accident wasn’t his fault, it was yours for not watching himDefinitely don’t put him in the crate as a punishment. Also, if he makes a mess in the house, don’t expect him to go outside immediately and go to the bathroom again. I have the same problem with my 11 week old chihuahua. I take him out in the morning, before I get ready for work, and he just wants to play because he’s excited to see me, thus he won’t go to the bathroom right away. If he won’t go to the bathroom right away, you might try playing with him for 5 minutes or so and then try again. Crate/potty training takes time, you’ve only been trying for 5 days so I’d give him a bit longer before getting too frustrated.Well you want to encourage going outside to pee and not punish, if you scold him while he is peeing in front of you (even though you think you are scolding because he is going inside) this will make him not want to pee in front of you and MUCH harder to train him to go. HE will basically see you and then decide not to pee because you might scold even when he is outside.
Encourage to go outside, continue with crate training, if he doesnt go in 15 minutes bring him back in put him in the crate take him out in another 15 minutes, try to get him to go outside, repeat, eventually he WILL pee outside
Then lots of praise, you could use treats, or toys, and free play in the house because he is now empty for a little while.
Repeat in another 20-30 minutes..
You have a 4 and 1/2 month old dog. They dont have a strong bladder yet, and you have had him for 5 days. Training takes alonger then that.
You will have accidents in the house but try to limit them by watching your dog, lots and lots of time outide to pee, if you are taking him out a lot he wont be peeing in the house. Watch for signs that he has to pee or poo, sniffing the ground, circling, going towards the door, going into dark corners, every dog will signal you you need to look for it too.
This process is going to take a while. and you have a puppy.
If you see your dog peeing or pooing in the house instread of yelling, try to just pick him up and move him outside if you can so you arent punishing but letting him know where he can go.
As his ability to hold his pee gets stronger you can lengthen how long between walks you can go. but for now, while your awake, take him out every 30 minutes whether he has to go or not.
