There are certainly guide dog school rejects. Most of them are offered first to the family that raised them. But, there are sometimes publicly available dogs as well. I would contact your nearest Service Dog training facility and ask for details on their specific program. its possible.. you would have to contact an agency that trains dogs for guide dogs to inquire about adopting one.. they ussually have a process tho.. the dogs are first offered back to the breeder.. if the breeder doesnt want the dog, its then offered to the puppy raiser.. if the raiser doesnt want it, then the dog is available for someone to adopt as a pet.. the place I used to raise puppies for adopted them for the cost of the spay/neuter.Yes, it is possible.
My aunt raised and trained guide dogs, and her last one didn’t pass…. I really don’t know what happened to him! I’ll have to find out….

My 8 month old German Shepherd underwent anesthesia while being spayed. An irregular heartbeat was found. After a cardiac work up the following was found:
ventricular ectopy
no sign of structural problems
ventricular arrhythmia
Her heartbeat was found to have a grade II/IV heart murmur, weak and delayed pulses, and an irregular heart rhythm.
Apparently there isn’t a cure and one of the first signs may be sudden death. Does anyone have any info on this? The vet suggested "German Shepherd Sudden Death Syndrome" what is this? I can’t find much info on the statistics or mortality rate. Any help would be appreciated.
