My 9 year old cat is used to dogs.I got a new dog a little while ago and he gets SOOO exited when he sees my cat, which causes Tigger to try and look 10 times his size and have a snarl fit.
Like I said,Tigger normaly has no problem with dogs, but today Curly was trying to leap over the fence to get at a stray kitty that was wandering around.
How do I get Curly to realise that kitties are not playthings?Sounds like Curly has what is called "prey drive". Lots of dogs have it, it’s not uncommon at all. Unfortunately, I don’t believe it can be "trained out of them". It can be redirected, perhaps through "chasing" a tennis ball or some other toy, but aside from correcting him EVERY time he does this towards smaller animals, there’s not a whole lot you can do. You CAN probably teach him to at least not chase *your* cat through repeated corrections. Basically, he starts in on your cat, you call his name sternly: "Curly, no!" and if he breaks focus, even for a moment, give him lots of praise and a treat. If he’s smart, he’ll soon learn that looking at you instead of chasing the cat gets him yummy things.
No hitting or smacking or even yelling necessary though, so don’t do those things.
Just be firm and consistent. You’ll get results. Good luck!
By the way, don’t worry about your spelling. Everyone knows what you’re saying. You should have introduced them slowly. Has the dog been cleared as far as making sure he tolerates other animals? If you’ve had your cats first, they shouldn’t be forced to be locked up in a room. This is going to make them really stressed out when finally face to face with the dog. They have no idea what is going on and they’re probably really scared now. The dog should have the run of half the house, and the cats should have the other half. If not able to do this, buy a childproof gate and separate them in different rooms. They’ll get to see and smell each other, but won’t be able to attack one another. If the dog is being able to have the whole house, he may get territorial and think he was the first one there and may wind up attacking your cats. It works with my dog and cat.
Hmm.. maybe you need some kind of food association trick, which will also put Curly in his place. You could get some food and make him sit and stay, then feed Tigger. After Tigger has eaten something, then Curly can eat, if he behaves. This let’s Curly know that Tigger is the boss and should be respected. It might take some time though.
GREAT names, by the way..!
Your new dog probably did get excited. Though not all dogs are cat friendly, I’ve read from this link, dogtime.com/training-by-personali… that considering a dog’s personality is one important aspect in training them. You didnt introduce them properly you have to start over again, search yahoo for "how to introduce cats and ogs" or "introducing new pet" you should train your dog with the "leave it" command.
This command should work when it goes after your cat as well.Get rid of the cats.Hi! Ok. If your dog might get your cat. Everytime he does something bad pinch him on his ear. Dont flick his nose like some people say. It hurts them way more. Get dog treats and see which SMALL ones he likes. Get him a big bag of small treats and teach him commands.
Say "Sit Down" or "Sit" and if he doesnt do it dont give him a treat
If he does give him one and say "Good Boy!" Do it over and over until he gets it right 3 times in a ROW.
Do the same with these tricks-
Sit Down or Sit
Rollover
Lay Down or Lie Down
Speak
Jumb
Spin
Stay
Fetch
And thats How you train it.
If your dog might hurt your Cat outside or inside just do this-
9:00am-9:15am Curlys Bathroom time
9:15am-9:30 Tiggers Bathroom Time
And make sure both animals are inside when you sleep. Because the dog is trained already to warn you about a fire and burglars. Dogs have hearing 10x better than you. Cool huh?!! Just pet them lots of times. and buy Dog treats and Wet Cat Food and give it to them seprately.
Make sure your Dog and Cat wont hurt each other. Dont let your dog do anything bad. If he poops on the floor put his face in the poop. and if the Cat does the same thing then do the same thing to the cat. it will teach your animals to wait.
God Bless You and Your Animals!
