I gave Zeus a bath last night (havent bathed him in weeks) within hours of giving him a bath with a new shampoo for itchy skin-he started itching himself….in the middle of the night he had bumps all over his body (redish bumps with clear liquid inside) and was itching and biting himself for relief. I am feeling helpless because every vet I go to say it is normal for reds (BOLOGNA!!!) Please help me…what should I do now???? Another vet????Yes, go to another vet. It is ABSOLUTELY not "normal" for any dog to break out in hives. And stop using that shampoo until you find out what exactly it is that he is reacting so severely to.Try putting baking soda in the water and use plain baking soda to bathe. Wet the fur, rub down with handfuls of baking soda. My sister has a dog with soap allergies and this is what the vet recommended she try before he went with a medicated shampoo. The dog smells fresh and she also does dry baths in between water baths. She gets a handful of baking soda a rubs it into the dogs fur, then brushes him. Any extra gets in the carpet and can be vacuumed up.
Also, what is the frequency that your dog should be bathed? I have a golden that can be done every couple of weeks and a bloodhound that should only be bathed once a month. We do the dry baths and they keep them smelling good (even the bloodhound which has a natural smell). It’s gotta be the shampoo. Either that, or he has parasites on him, or it’s an allergic reaction. Your dog could just be allergy-prone to shampoo.
Go for a second opinion; perhaps the new vet will say something else, because clearly your current one isn’t helping much.
Good luck ! !Sounds like you need a specialist who can determine what your dog is allergic to. It could be the food you are feeding, it could be the shampoo.
Have you tried an oatmeal shampoo?Try an all natural shampoo. One with no chemicals at all like aloe vera or something. Your dog is probably just having a reaction to the shampoo. And yes, I would start taking him to a different vet.your dog is getting hives from the shampoo you may need to get a medicated shampoo from a vet! Yes I would find a new vet and ask about if medicated shampoo would help.Go to another vet.
Look on the labels of the shampoos you have tried and see which ingredients they ALL have. Then avoid shampoos with those ingredients.Obviously an allergy dog!
WHY do you imagine it needs a bath at all?
An occasional wipe-down w/a damp washcloth should be plenty.
Dogs aren’t people.Sure sounds like the shampoo is the culprit. Shampoo for itchy skin is not necessarily the same thing as a hypoallergenic shampoo. Doublecheck yours…you want the hypoallergenic shampoo. Make sure the water you bath him with is not too hot as it wouldn’t take much to irritate/scald already sensitive skin. Run some over the tender inside of your forearm to make sure that it feels pleasant, not overly warm nor too cool. Also check for a hypoallergenic conditioner to make sure his skin/coat to not dry out from his bath. If you can’t find one, start adding salmon oil to his diet to help improve the condition of his skin and coat (which might be a good idea regardless of whether or not you find the conditioner). If hypoallergenic shampoo is not possible, you might just try giving Zeus a good rinse with warm water & baking soda. The baking soda will gently clean/deodorize his skin & hair. Dobes are prone to dry skin under the best of conditions, so try to limit bathing Zeus until he really needs it. My dobe is blessed with good skin, but I usually only bath him about once a month during the spring & summer and about every 6 weeks in the winter (so as to avoid overdrying his skin during dry, cold weather). Best of luck to you and Zeus….hope this helps.

A little over a month ago, my chocolate Lab came up to me and I pet him or whatever and when I looked down at my hand there was a streak of blood on it. It took me forever to figure out where my dog was bleeding from. It was his lip/mouth area…the bark got scraped off somehow…about the size of a quarter. It is really hard to see because you literally have to pull his skin down because the was his loose skin sits around his mouth the wound is tucked in there. So, I was cleaning his ears last night and discovered that the wound was still not healed at his mouth! It has been over a month…it looked wet…like a thick film of clear liquid with a few dried blood spots. I put peroxide on it and it fizzed a lot…then I put some triple ointment antibiotic on it. I’m just worried about the fact that it hasn’t healed yet…probably because it stays moist. What can I do? Can a vet do something for it that I can’t? Please Help.
