« Can an 8-week old pup hold its urine over night?

I went to make an appt to get my chow chow groomed they said they can’t groom him. They take in pits people say they have a bad name but so do pits and they take in them why wont allot of groomers take them, (I have nothing against pits I love them to my oldest pit just died of old age)from what I have heard people say that Chow Chows are very difficult to groom.. In my opinion, I believe that there are dogs out there that are given a bad rap, just cause of their breed.
Heck my shih tzu might go off quicker than a pitbull. To me it’s how you raise those dogs.
Sorry your having so much trouble… It’s just people’s lack of intelligence and it just shows their ignorance to me.I actually work as a groomer and we didn’t used to take in Chows for grooming. We have gotten rid of that policy as new people came in and replaced the old ones. The only reason I could think that a groomer would take pits and not Chows is because to groom a pissed off pit is fairly simple…to groom a pissed of Chow is not. It takes a lot more time and effort to fully groom a Chow and some people are not comfortable grooming them because of their reputation. I, however, do not agree with this discrimination, I think pits and chows are more likely to react quickly than some other dogs, but it all depends on the owner and how they were raised. I don’t feel this merits banning a certain breed from being groomed. Where are you from? Are their states near you where owning Chows are illegal? I would just keep calling around, if there is a Petsmart around your area I would try calling them. I work for Petsmart and we are NOT allowed to refuse a dog based on breed (regardless of what the employees might say) and if they do you can call corporate to inform them that they’re refusing your dog. Sometimes people need a kick in the butt to get out of that mind set of Chows are bad. Good luck! Its breed specific discrimination. People are afraid of chows and even breeders think ALL chows are bad. To be honest, if they wouldn’t take in your dog, be happy. At least you now have a list of groomers that are ignorant and generalize about breeds of dogs. You don’t ever need to give them your business and you certainly can run a few smear campaigns on local internet boards if you feel up to it. I would think petsmart would do it.My cousin is a groomer and she grooms several Chows. Most of them are very nice dogs, but there are a few that are stubborn. She knows how to handle them, though, which a good groomer should know. There are such things as muzzles, and just "knowing" dog body language will let you know if the dog is going to bite you. What she hates is when someone brings in a Chow that is completely matted and then she has to shave it down to the skin and the owners whine about it.She tells them it’s their own fault because they didn’t keep the dog combed. But an experienced groomer should be willing to groom all breeds of dogs. There were three dogs that attacked my cousin and she told the owners that she would not groom them again. One was a working police dog ( GSD),one was a Boxer, and one was a German Shorthaired Pointer mix. She has some little dogs that will try to bite, but she can easily handle them. But the Chows have been no problem.Chows are difficult to groom.. all of them are nasty about it, and the risk of being bit is high. Add their temperment to the time it takes to groom that thick coat.. and its just not worth it.. I used to work for a lady who would groom chows, and she’d charge no less than $85 just for a bath and brush for one… more if the animal was to be shaved down.
Chows are the WORST breed to try to groom. Give me a pit bull any day!
ADDED
There are many breeds that may make great pets for the right household.. but sorry, some just do not take to being groomed.. I used to work for a groomer, and the chows were the worst, all of them needed muzzled to groom.. the next worst breeds were schnauzers and cocker spaniels, while a few were ok, most needed muzzled…. shih tzus were among the easiest to groom, pretty much all of them were laid-back about being groomed!Because SO many people are ignorant to this breed. They look at it and see and man eating hairy beast. Not the loving, and loyal dogs that they can be. And also, there are people out there that go out and get chow chows, not knowing how much training and obedience and exercise they need in order to be normal functioning dogs without agression etc. Pure simple COWARDLY bigoted ignorance!
A coated dog is a coated dog,no matter what breed.
If *your* dog is a PROVEN spoiled rotten monster, anybody can & should refuse to deal w/it.
If it’s just the breed, then they are too to stupid & amateur to trust the dog to…any dog.
Pet-NOT-so-smart is NOT quality grooming!
